Manual Dexterity Check!

By Tiffany Huang, Class of 2026

Happy March! 🍀

It me again, today we will be discussing some fun activities that can help you brush up on manual dexterity 😄 This list is from the ADEA mixed with some ways you can do these activities in Arizona!

1. Drawing/Painting

  • Painting with a Twist ( With locations in Gilbert, Phoenix, and Tempe, bring yourself or some friends for a fun night of painting and drinks! This is a great opportunity to network with others in the community or have bonding time with the homies. In-studio classes range from $25 to $50. No experience necessary. Other paint and sip events here:

  • Mesa Arts Center offers many art courses as well from pottery, painting, glass blowing, etc. They also offer scholarship opportunities for these courses. More info here

  • DIY: Head over to your local Michaels or JOANN and purchase some art supplies and create away! Make sure to check online for any store coupons (there usually are!) 😋

2. Crocheting/Knitting

  • The Woobles ( Learn how to crochet in an hour with this cute AAPI-owned company. The Woobles allowed me to tick off a last-minute 2022 bucket list activity. I present to you Sebastian the lion. 10/10 would recommend.

  • Tempe Yarn & Fiber ( This locally owned yarn shop also hosts crocheting/knitting/etc. classes! They also sell unique yarns for you to take that knowledge home and create away on your own.

  • Family Arts Needlework Shop ( Learn how to knit/bejewel/stitch with this lovely nonprofit store with excellent customer service.

3. Sculpting/Ceramics

  • Mesa Arts Center ( Offers metal sculpting/pottery/ceramics classes and many other courses that will help strengthen your manual dexterity skills!

  • Bits & Pieces Ceramics ( Work with or purchase ceramics at this location. You may have to call to see what the workshop schedule is though.

4. Learning a musical instrument

  • Tammie’s Music Studio ( Learn how to play piano or guitar at Tammie’s Music studio. With rates from $140/month for weekly 30-minute lessons to $280/month for weekly 60 min lessons.

  • Linton Milano Music ( Learn how to play string or brass instruments with private lessons costing $35 for half an hour or $66 for one hour.
