Holiday Prep

Nov. 13th, 2022

By Gracie Groth, Class of 2026

Tis’ the season! The busiest time of year is upon us, as the department stores blast their merry music & the TV advertisements swear that everything is “on sale”. Feeling overwhelmed during this joyous time is not uncommon. Traveling to visit family, buying the perfect gifts, and overindulging are all things that can impact your feelings about the holiday season.

Here are some tips to keep yourself in balance as you navigate through the winter wonderland:

  • Make A Plan: Making a plan well in advance can give you something to look forward to! Book flights/ road trips early, make a shopping/gift list, & coordinate with the rest of your friends & family about their plans

  • Ask For Help/Give Out Help: Accept offers to help shop, wrap or cook. If you don’t have a long list of things to do, consider helping out someone who does, such as a parent or grandparent. The holiday season is also a good time to volunteer & give back.

  • Realize It’s A Marathon, Not A Sprint: While extra social gatherings can be exciting, you don’t want to compromise your physical or mental health by doing too much. Acknowledge that you cannot do everything for everyone.

  • Try To Maintain A Healthy Lifestyle: Try your best to make good food choices & relax to restore energy. Get plenty of sleep & cuddle up to enjoy a holiday movie or two! If you are out in the cold, remember to bundle up.

  • Manage Your Spending: Decrease the financial stress by making & sticking to a budget. Thoughtfulness need not come with a hefty price tag. It may also be helpful to research sales, buy your gifts early in the season, or try online shopping to avoid crowds.

Whatever your plans are this season, remember to take care & enjoy yourself. Appreciate those around you, reflect on the year, & have a holly jolly holiday!
