HB 1542 Proposed, Addressing Adult Emergency Dental Coverage

From AzDA Executive Director Kevin Earle:

The House Budget Reconciliation Bill (more-or-less, the “Negotiated State Budget Bill”) was just posted and includes the following language that will restore emergency dental coverage for adults under AHCCCS, the Arizona State Medicaid program:

FOR PERSONS WHO ARE AT LEAST TWENTY-ONE YEARS OF AGE, EMERGENCY DENTAL CARE AND EXTRACTIONS IN AN ANNUAL AMOUNT OF NOT MORE THAN ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS PER MEMBER.

No hearings or votes on the bill have occurred yet, but that should happen in the next couple of days. If it passes, the new benefit will take effect on October 1st of this year. Restoration of the adult emergency dental benefit caps a seven-year effort by the Arizona Dental Association to get patients with acute dental conditions out of emergency rooms and into dental offices and clinic where they can be appropriately treated.

Be sure to check back at The Pulp Exposure for updates on the proposed HB 2542.
